Scott Somers Top Issues

  Scott Somers has spent over a decade serving the residents of District 6. After serving two influential terms from 2006 to 2015, Scott returned to the City Council in 2023 with a renewed mission to balance economic growth with preserving the character of our neighborhoods that makes our community so special. Scott remains steadfast in his commitment to fiscal responsibility, economic development, and enhancing the quality of life for every Mesa family.

Keeping Mesa Affordable

Scott Somers is focused on making Mesa more affordable by prioritizing fiscal responsibility to ensure municipal resources are managed efficiently. 

  • Cut Community Facility District (CFD) tax rates by 35.9 to 47.7% (these are in Eastmark and Cadence).
  • Hired the city’s first independent city auditor.
  • Adopted a Water/Wastewater Capacity Fee to keep residential rates as low as possible and ensure growth pays for itself.
  • Reinstated budget public outreach meetings to improve accountability and transparency.

Investing in Public Safety

Somers aims to blend technical innovation with his frontline experience as a former first responder to keep Mesa ranked among the safest large cities in America.

  • Opened the Northeast Public Safety facility, the first new police station in Mesa in more than a decade. 
  • In Superstition Patrol District, overall crime is down 11%, crime against persons is  down 9%, and property crimes are down 11%.
  • Expanded the nationally-recognized Real Time Crime Center to 24/7 operation. The RTCC has helped solve over 930 felony and 640 misdemeanor cases and recover 268 stolen vehicles.
  • Partnered with non-profit agencies to reduce opioid deaths resulting in an 80% decline since 2020.
  • Supported community partnerships to divert 911 calls to behavioral health experts - since 2023 diverted 8,185 calls.

More to come! Fire Station 224 is under construction to improve services to Hawes Crossing, Boulder Creek, Desert Place, and surrounding communities. 

Quality of Life

Somers is delivering on long-promised amenities for southeast Mesa. His leadership is transforming the region from a fast-growing area into a complete community with the high-quality facilities families deserve.

  • Re-opened the Mesa Express Library in a new, permanent location in Christopher J Brady Park in Superstition Springs.
  • Opened the Gateway Library, the first new branch library in Mesa in 30 years. 
  • Construction underway in Phase V of the Great Park, with pickleball, basketball, volleyball courts and an RC track.
  • Signal Butte BMX Park under construction.
  • Worked with state representatives and MAG to ensure funding available in Prop 479 for sound walls along the SR-24.

More to come! Eastmark Aquatic Center, upgrades to Augusta Ranch Park, and a dog park in Christopher J Brady Park.

Economic Development

Scott Somers is securing southeast Mesa’s future by supporting local entrepreneurs, attracting high-wage industries, and finally bringing quality retail and dining to the District.

  • ISTB12 education center anchors the ASU Polytechnic Innovation Zone
  • Focus on advanced manufacturing and industries that bring high-value jobs! Strive Pharmacy, KoMiCo, JP Nippon, Super Radiator Coils, Gulfstream, Pentagon Technologies, Xnrgy, APEX Power Conversions, and many more. Since 2023, District 6 has recorded 91 completed economic development projects, resulting in 6,631 new jobs, $4.2 billion in private capital investment! 
  • Created the Mesa Quality Retail Initiative to bring more upscale restaurants and retail to Mesa. Early success includes East Market and Restaurant Row at Medina Station. This program received the 2025 Golden Prospector Award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development. 
  • Founded LaunchPoint, a technology business incubator that has graduated 70 small business with $325 million in private capital.
  • Opened the Mesa Business Builder.

More to come! District 6’s current economic development pipeline includes 17 job-generating projects, ~3,277 jobs and $2.83B investment. Legacy Park is a multi-billion dollar investment in a resort hotel and quality retail across from Arizona Athletic Grounds.
